Propolis

Another magical substance produced by the Bees is Propolis.

This is a compound they actively source and collect and use liberally inside the Hive to sterilize it and subdue bacteria and fungal growth. They will collect resinous plant exudation from the emerging buds or from wounds in plants and trees.

This resinous exudation being a potent mix of antibacterial and anti fungal phytochemicals the plants and trees use to protect themselves.

The bees will collect this sticky substance in the same way they collect pollen, bringing it back to the hive adhering to the pollen baskets on their hind legs.

Mixing it with beeswax and saliva they will then spread this liberally about inside the hive, using it to seal cracks and generally sterilize the inside of the hive.

Propolis has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, and is available today in many over the counter msdicines ranging from couguh drops to tinctures to throat sprays.
